GENERAL INFORMATION
The Spring Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant is fully operational. The facility has a permitted capacity of 1.5 million gallons per day. It contains a state-certified field laboratory, aeration tanks, clarifiers, chlorination and de-chlorination systems as well as a solids handling facility. The treated wastewater discharges through an outfall pipe into the Lower Little River. The solids are removed from the wastewater and are applied to an application area located adjacent to the treatment facility. These solids provide moisture, nutrients, and conditioning to soils.
The State requires that the Plant have an Operator in Charge (ORC). The Plant is categorized as a class three (3) plant and our ORC on site is a Class four (4); therefore, our plant is in compliance. One will also find that all of the staff at the plant are current and up to date on certifications and training requirements necessary to fulfill their job duties and keep the plant in compliance with local and state regulations.
The plant is manned twelve (12) hours per day, five (5) days per week. There is 24-hour coverage available via on-call and the plant is visited for at least two (2) hours per day on the weekends and holidays.
Occasionally, there may be a chlorine alarm that sounds when a leak is detected but there is no off-site danger. Other “alarms” are communicated via computer to an on-call phone number and addressed promptly.
Plant tours are available to school groups and civic organizations. Advanced notice is required. To schedule a visit, please contact the Plant ORC, Plant Superintendent, or Water Resources Manager for more information.
